So you can tell that the Oscars are getting ever closer with the studios releasing their heavyweight dramas and likely Oscar contenders the latest being the Beautiful Boy trailer.
Directed by Felix Van Groeningen it stars Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan. Carell has proved what a great dramatic actor he is with brilliant runs in films Foxcatcher (for which he was nominated as Best Actor), The Big Short and the recent Battle of the Sexes. Likewise Timothée Chalamet another Oscar nominee for ‘Call me by your name’ and Amy Ryan was Oscar nominated for ‘Gone Baby Gone’ whereas Maura Tierney is a Golden Globe winner for The Affair. So the cast has a pretty good pedigree when it comes to awards.
Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, BEAUTIFUL BOY chronicles the true and inspiring story of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years. The Beautiful Boy trailer is movingly played in its brief two minutes and for any parent whose had the agony of watching their child go through the agonies of addiction this will be a hard watch.
Cameron Crowe was originally set to direct Mark Wahlberg but both dropped out due to other commitments. Instead the film went to Felix Van Groeningen a Belgium born director with nothing especially known about his previous films but from the Beautiful Boy trailer it certainly seems to be a performance based film which will garner any award nominations. This was recently given a limited release in the US and has already garnered some pretty good reviews and was given a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film opens in the UK on January 18th 2019 and here’s the Beautiful Boy trailer…..
