Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman to star in remake....

Hitting the news stands is the announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman to star in remake of one of the Eighties bleakest of comedies.  That film is question is 1989’s ‘The War of the Roses’ that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and was directed by Danny DeVito. The film earned an impressive $160m back in the day. Cumberbatch and Colman will play the couple.

The film told the story of a married couple, Oliver and Barbara Rose, who seemingly live the perfect life in a perfect old mansion. When the wife realizes she no longer loves her husband, and in in fact bitterly dislikes him, it precipitates divorce proceedings that start of vicious and only escalate from there, as humiliations, sabotage and violence take hold of both sides. The remake will be retitled simply, ‘The Roses’.

Jay Roach, the comedy director who segued into drama with movies such as the Margot Robbie & Charlize Theron starrer, ‘Bombshell’ (reviewed HERE), is helming the feature that is in development at the studio arm. Tony McNamara, who earned an Oscar nomination for writing Searchlight’s Oscar Nominated Poor Things wrote the screenplay which in turn is based on the novel published in 1981 by Warren Adler.
