With Avengers Endgame ending Marvel‘s Third Phase we now have the first of Phase Four with the long awaited Black Widow trailer giving the character her first standalone film and will also be the first film in the wake of the ‘Infinity Saga’ coming to a close with “Spider-Man: Far from Home”. This will be the ninth time Scarlett Johansson has played the role if you include the Captain America cameo.
The Black Widow trailer looks to be set primarily in the year between ‘Civil War’ and ‘Infinity War’ as Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff is on the run whilst dealing with some old business from her pre-SHIELD days when she was a KGB-trained spy and assassin. There looks to be some pretty good action set pieces in this if the Black Widow trailer is anything to go by and it gives us a glimpse of more of the supporting characters including villain Taskmaster.
There’s an impressive cast here too with newly Oscar nominated Florence Pugh (Little Women, Midsommar, Fighting with my Family), David Harbour (Hellboy reboot) and the rather fab Rachel Weisz. Pugh had tough competition to be cast in the role of Yelena Belova as Emma Watson and Saorise Ronan we also rumoured to be in the running for the role also.
Added to this is Ray Winstone who we would presume is keen to put his appearance in Cats quickly behind him and there’s a rumour that Robert Downy Jr’s Tony Stark will appear but we’re not so sure. Directing is Cate Shortland one of the several women now directing superhero films after Patty Jenkins triumphant Wonder Woman and don’t forget the new Harley Quinn Birds of Prey film too.
“Black Widow” opens in cinemas May 1st.
