If anyone needed a career boost it has to be Vince Vaughn because having started off so well with his breakout role in Swingers things took off with high profile and successful films (Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Dodgeball, Old School) the rubbish he started appearing in soon began to massively overshadow . the list is almost endless and includes detritus such as The Break Up, the Internship, Delivery Man, The Dilemma and worst of all the shot for shot remake of Psycho. His agent has clearly given him a kick up the arse and has started appearing in far better films in far better roles the most recent being Hacksaw Ridge.
His new film couldn’t be more removed from his usual comedic roles and is almost unrecognisable in, ‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’. Where he plays a former boxer named Bradley loses his job as an auto mechanic, and his troubled marriage is about to expire. At this crossroads in his life, he feels that he has no better option than to work for an old buddy as a drug courier. This vocation improves his situation until the terrible day that he finds himself in a gunfight between a group of police officers and his own ruthless allies. When the smoke clears, Bradley is badly hurt and thrown in prison, where his enemies force him to commit acts of violence that turn the place into a savage battleground.
Directed by S.Craig Zahler whose last film was the horror western ‘Bone Tomahawk’ which had some extremely gruesome scenes this promises to be no different.
