Dungeons & Dragons Honour Among Thieves - 4K UHD, Blu-Ray...

Hollywood ever on the lookout for IP opportunities has over the years trend to board games for inspiration meaning that we have had films based on Cluedo, Battleship and even Ouija which started life as a family board game, the only drawback being that you did end up satanically possessed, spouting profanities and vomiting pea soup or, as our Editor likes to call it, ‘Saturday Night’. But Dungeons and Dragons, a role playing game, that is hugely popular although as our Editor insists, only if you’ve had never had a girlfriend.  Dungeons & Dragons Honour Among Thieves 4K UHD, blu-ray, DVD & download) is not the first film version of the game.

Going all the way back to 1983 there was an animated TV series that ran for two years and was widely liked but it was in 2000 that we got the first big screen adaptation starring Jeremy Irons in a sombre version that tanked at the box office. Yet despite that there would be further albeit equally uninspired attempts. It would be John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein, both keen fans of the games (and to our Editors amazement both with wives) who saw that the game had not been served well by previous incarnations and co-wrote a script for a film that embraced both the fantasy and the game element

They got it right with their script following a charming thief (Chris Pine) and a band of unlikely adventurers (Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis) who undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people (Daisy Head and Hugh Grant) in this hilarious and action-packed adventure. (read our review HERE)

Released in cinemas the film deserved to do far better than it did because it is an absolute blast getting the tone absolutely right with several really great set pieces (one with an overweight dragon is excellent), a lot of laugh out loud moments (a scene with a cadaver would not have been out of place in Monty Python and the Holy Grail) and a good cast headed up by Chris Pine and as ever Hugh Grant on scene stealing form making this a thoroughly enjoyable family film

The transfer of the film to disc has captured the colours well and the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack serves the film well but the bonus features are very much of the usual EPK variety but the Fantastic Foes and also The Bestiary features are an informative look behind the scenes. What it does miss is a writer –director commentary which hard core fans of the game would appreciate and would hopefully explain why certain aspects of the game were opted for whilst others were omitted. Nonetheless the film alone makes this a worthy addition for fans of the game and yet is still a readily accessible film for those not up on the game lore.
