With the much anticipated trailer for ‘Alien:Covenant’ now out and garnering some surprisingly negative reactions from some quarters (we think it looks a big improvement on Prometheus) we can expect more teasers and hype over the next few months and its got to compete with the superhero space opera that is, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 which opens a couple of weeks before and ‘Wonder Woman’ which open a couple of weeks afterwards.
Both are comic book superhero films and something which Scott has never directed. So would he helm one? His reply?
”Superhero movies are not my kind of thing – that’s why I’ve never really done one. [I’ve been asked] several times, but I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero. [I want to] keep making smart films.
I’ve done that kind of movie – Blade Runner really is a comic strip when you think about it, it’s a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I’d have a f**king good story, as opposed to no story!
I want to keep doing cinema and I hope [the popularity of superhero films] doesn’t affect those of us who still keep making smart films. I’m hoping it doesn’t affect me.”
So that would seem to be a pretty definitive, No. It seems a little unfair because Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was pretty good by anyone’s standards.
However when it comes to making ‘smart films’ he seems to have forgotten that he made, ‘Exodus’, ‘G I Jane’ and does anyone remember, ‘A Good Year’ with Russell Crowe? Not even Russell Crowe probably.
