Quite whether the studio executive was rolling his eyes when he greenlit this sequel as he gave it a secondary title is anyone’s guess but after ‘Mamma Mia’ made an incredible $602m a sequel was always going to follow. The problem for the film makers here is that the first film was based a a hugely popular stage show and had an inbuilt audience whereas this sequel has been written from scratch.
Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth all reprise their roles which will be partly set in the past with younger versions of the lead characters. Joining them will be Lily James, Alexa Davies, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan, Hugh Skinner, Andy Garcia and watch out for the very last scene in the trailer which features a 150 year old Hollywood star.
Let’s hope that Pierce Brosnan spares the audience his ‘singing’ this time round.
Film is released in the Us on the 20th July 2018 and in the UK 27th July 2018.
