With the summer blockbuster now well under way its the Christmas blockbusters that are now being teased with the first glimpse of the Mortal Engines trailer which has Lord of the Rings Oscar winner Peter Jackson behind it with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who have penned the screenplay.
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
Mortal Engines is the startling, new epic adventure directed by Oscar®-winning visual-effects artist Christian Rivers (King Kong) and is an adaptation from the award-winning book series by Philip Reeve, published in 2001 by Scholastic.
The Mortal Engines trailer looks pretty impressive visually which you would expect from both Jackson and Christian Rivers but whether this will spawn a franchise or will be a one off is any ones guess but from the trailer this hardly looks like a low budget film so much will be riding on its box office success. Mortal Engines is in UK cinemas from December 14th and with no Star Wars film and only the Transformers spin off Bumblebee to contend with it should do well.
We’re still curious as to when Peter Jackson will direct again. He was meant to direct the next Tin Tin animated film but there’s no sign of that despite it intended to have been shot and released over a year ago and his remake of The Dambusters looks no closer to fruition. So for the time being we can look forward to Mortal Engines…….
Here’s the trailer…….
