So with the original 1987 film out on a brand spanking new blu ray steelbook as we covered in our Home Entertainment section HERE well news is out that there’s to be a new Robocop sequel.
This new film will be helmed by Australian filmmaker Abe Forsythe who directed the recent Lupita Nyong’o zombie comedy “Little Monsters,” and this Robocop sequel is tentatively titled, ”Robocop Returns” which will be for for MGM and Atlas Entertainment. News is that the Robocop sequel will ignore the second film (which wasn’t at all bad) and the third film (which was bad) as well as the instantly forgettable 2014 remake. The screenwriters for the first film were Ed Neumier and Michael Miner and it appears that they wrote a sequel years ago which was jettisoned for Frank Miller’s script instead. This Robocop sequel sees Ed Neumier and Michael Miner co writing with Justin Rhodes (“Terminator: Dark Fate”) penning a recent re-write. Abe Forsythe will now re-write the script penned by Rhodes with Neumier, Miner and Richard Suckle are producing.
Hopefully this won’t be a CGI fest as the original was a combination of live action, miniatures, stop motion as well as great make up work by genius Rob Bottin who had proved his brilliance on films like The Howling and The Thing and its rumoured that he and director Verhoeven clashed on set on an almost daily basis about just how the make up effects should be shown on screen best,
It’s still very early days yet and its likely to change again before it goes into production next year for a 2021 release and the film saw mad Dutch director Paul Verhoeven’s career go stratospheric and going on to direct more sci fi classics Total Recall, Starship Troopers as well as Basic Instinct and ….um…. Showgirls.
