Rumoured to be Robert Redford’s last film The Old Man and the Gun is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.
The Old Man and the Gun trailer has an 82 year old Robert Redford still looking younger than his years in what looks like a bit of a rom-com-adventure in the style of Spielberg’s ‘Catch Me If You Can’ that starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
Directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon – which also starred Robert Redford) The Old Man and the Gun trailer also features Casey Affleck (A Ghost Story, Manchester by the Sea), Danny Glover (Cold Case Files, Lethal Weapon), Tika Sumpter (Final Space, Southside with You), Tom Waits (Seven Psychopaths, The Book of Eli) and Sissy Spacek (Carrie, Badlands) and is a pretty decent cast.
Like fellow pensioner Clint Eastwood (who’s 88 years old) Robert Redford has kept himself busy in films appearing in one every year since 2012. Albeit most of them have been quickly forgotten – ‘The Discovery’ anyone? or the unfortunately titled – ‘Our Souls at Night’ – (quite how that title got past the studio’s marketing department is anyone’s guess.) but he also appeared in ‘Captain America : The Winter Solider’ back in 2014.
We wouldn’t be surprised if this attracts Best Actor nominations for him at next year’s Oscar’s when the Academy gets all dewy eyed about Robert Redford retiring but we’ll see.
The Old Man and the Gun starring Robert Redford et al opens on 7th December 2018.
