The Last Jedi has done the expected good business making $1.321billion at the box office so far (more than Rogue One’s $1.036 billion) but only over half of The Force Awakens $2.068 billion. Nonetheless with Disney having paid George Lucas $4billion for the franchise the films have made enough now for all future films to be a nice little earner for the studio. Which brings us to the next Star wars spin off, Solo.
It’s been widely publicised that the two directors, Phil Lord & Chris Miller, were publicly and unceremoniously fired from ‘Solo’ and quickly replaced with an established and safe pair of hands in Ron Howard. The pair of directors did seem to have been a bit daft to think that Disney would put up with their behaviour and even less so producer Kathleen Kennedy and screenwriter God Lawrence Kasdan.
Kennedy has an astonishing enviable track record having produced many of Spielberg’s films as well as films ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’ and the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy. Whereas Kasdan wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back and The Bodyguard and has been nominated for an Oscar four times.
It’s not the first time that directors have for themselves in hot water with the franchise. Rogue One had reshoots which were not a particularly well kept secret.
For once it’s a Star Wars film that’s not being released at Christmas with ‘Solo’ instead being released in May leaving Christmas free for Disney’s much anticipated Mary Poppins sequel starring Emily Blunt.
So what an we expect from ‘Solo’, the second spin off film which overs the early days of Han Solo and Chewbecca? Well frankly we don’t really want to know as we’d rather wait until it comes out.
The film is released May 25th in both the UK & USA (yet France gets it on the 23rd!!)
