The Crow 30th Anniversary Edition - Brandon Lee's tragic last film

The death of any star are made all the worse during the course of a film shoot. Oliver Reed famously passed away after a drinking spree when shooting Gladiator but it is on-set deaths that are most tragic as they are nearly all avoidable. Vic Morrow’s horrific death on the set of ‘The Twilight Zone : The Movie’ was made all worse when the young children also in the scene (who should never have been on a night shoot that involved stunts and explosions), were  killed alongside him. Though rare the on-set accident still occurs most recently with the Alec Baldwin film ‘Rust’ which has already seen the production armourer start a prison sentence and further court cases are to follow for other personnel. But for Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee (who himself died tragically young), hit fans hard and rocked the industry once more – seven years after his debut film in 1986’s Kung Fu ; The Movie. his life would come to a tragic end on 31st March 1993 on the set of The Crow. He was 28 years of age. The Crow 30th Anniversary Edition – 4kUHD / BLU-RAY celebrates his legacy

The Crow saw Lee starring as young musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee)  brutally murdered alongside his fiancée by members of a violent gang.  On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger.  He then sets out on a macabre mission to mercilessly hunt down everyone responsible and make them answer for their crimes.

Originally released on 13th  May 1993,  THE CROW entranced audiences and critics alike with its gothic aesthetic, breathtaking action, and Brandon Lee’s soulful performance at the centre of director Alex Proyas’ revenge fantasy.  The film had been a sleeper box office hit with the tragedy of Lee’s death drawing fans to the film which had had to have scenes using state of the art trickery to resurrect his character  for certain scenes to finish the film.

The Crow developed a passionate cult following that spawned three sequels, a television series, a video game, toys, and novels.  Based on the comic book saga of the same name by James O’Barr, was  an action-packed thriller bursting with hypnotic style and dazzling visuals. All three releases include a brand-new three-part documentary created for the 30th anniversary entitled “Shadows & Pain: Designing The Crow.”  The new piece is a fascinating deep dive with legendary production designer Alex McDowell, who discusses all aspects of designing the 1994 classic, as well as his experience working with visionary director Alex Proyas and the film’s late star, Brandon Lee. Also, for the first time on disc, the releases include a conversation with the late Hollywood legend Edward R. Pressman who discussed his prolific career on the occasion of Sideshow Collectibles’ release of a limited figure for THE CROW.

The Crow 30th Anniversary Edition stands as a testament to a rising star cut down in his prime seemingly because a scene in which it was decided to use a gun without consent from the weapons coordinator, who had been sent home early that night. The late Michael Massee (he died in 2016) was handed the gun unaware it was loaded with full power blanks and shot the scene, He was equally unaware that a bullet had become dislodged from a previous shot and had lodged itself in the barrel. Upon filming the scene the blank round forced the bullet out the barrel striking Brandon Lee. The crew only noticed when Lee was slow getting up and doctors and set medics rushed to his aid desperately trying to keep him alive for the next five hours.  The bullet had lodged itself in Lee’s lower spine and he was pronounced dead at 1:04 P.M. the next day. The tragedy was compounded further as he was supposed to marry Eliza Hutton a few weeks later on 17th  April 1993.

The Crow was and remains something of a goth fest but nonetheless this 30th anniversary disc is something of a must with excellent bonus features.  The commentary with director Alex Proyas is especially good in what was his first major feature film having established himself in music videos for artists that included INXS, Fleetwood Mac and Sting. But The Crow remains both his and Brandon Lee’s best film.
