The Visual Effects Oscar Nomination list just got shorter…….

The campaigning for Oscar nomination starts to really get going during Christmas as many films jostling for Best Film leave it to the last minute to be released so as to be fresh in the Academy’s mind hence the limited release of Scorsese’s ‘Silence’ in the US on 23rd December before its wide release on 6th January 2017 .

But many of the categories have lists drawn up which are whittled down to a final five and the Oscar for Best Visual Effects is no different and with the list now down to ten films. There are some surprising titles that have fallen off the list including ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Warcraft’ but also dropped are ‘Deadpool’, ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Sully’.

So the current list of ten as it stands is as follows:

“Arrival”
“The BFG”
“Captain America: Civil War”
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
“The Jungle Book”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Passengers”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

This has to be further whittled down to a list of five for the 89th Oscars which will be announced on Tuesday, January 24th ahead of the main Oscars ceremony itself on Sunday, February 26th. To get to this final list of five each film will have the opportunity to show ten-minute excerpts to the voting committee.

Having looked at the list we thought we’d stick our neck out and predict that ‘Captain America’, ‘Deepwater Horizon’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts’ will be the final five.
