After Sully we now have Tully a motherhood dramedy feature “Tully” and reunites “Young Adult” director Jason Reitman, writer Diablo Cody and actress Charlize Theron.
The story follows Marlo (Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, and is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis).
We like Charlize Theron although perhaps our Editor likes her a little too much which might explain the injunction and this seems to be a move into drama after a a string of high otane films that included Mad Max Fury Road, Atomic Blonde & Fast and Furious 8. Whats more this reunites her with director Jason Reitman (son of comedy film royalty Ivan Reitman) and together they made the immensely enjoyable though under rated ‘Young Adult’ in 2011.
Even better is that Reitman is working from a script by his frequent collaborator Diablo Cody. Cody is a writer with an extremely interesting background having worked as a stripper and as a phone sex worker before writing the whip smart ‘Juno’ with some of the finest dialogue heard since Tarantino’s first script’s. So good was her script that it won her a Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Not bad for her first ever script. Since then she’s gone on to write the aforementioned Young Adult but perhaps most leftfield of all is that she’s writing the screenplay for a ‘Barbie’ movie.
They’re a pretty unique threesome and it’s a credit to Theron that she lets it all hang out here with sagging breasts, a pot belly and no make up – something you can’t imagine Jennifer Lopez allowing themselves to be filmed.
Film is released in the UK and USA on 20th April 2018.
