What we know about Gladiator 2

Gladiator remains a much loved Ridley Scott film and made a huge star of Russell Crowe winning him an Oscar along the way so the anticipation for the sequel is huge and with footage being shown at the recent Vegas based CinemaCon here’s what we know about Gladiator 2…

  • Paul Mescal is revealed to be a gladiator (though not the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus,)
  • His character will fight murderous monkeys and also a soldier on a rhinoceros.
  • At one point, the Colosseum is filled with water for an epic ship battle.
  • Mescal’s character is inspired by Crowe’s Maximus saying “I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor. That a slave could get justice in the arena,” he says at one point in the trailer.
  • The film  features anti-war politics, with Pedro Pascal playing a military figure who no longer wants to throw away Rome’s young men on war. As a result, he too is then condemned to fight as a gladiator.
  • Denzel Washington is rumoured to be guiding Mescal to inspire revolution.

Ridley Scott introduced the film in a video from London modestly claiming that Gladiator 2, ‘is possibly even more extraordinary than the first,”. Judging on what has been seen so far he might well be right.

The film opens on 22nd November 2023….and that what we know about Gladiator 2
