It’s the role he said he was born to play and in fairness to Dwayne Johnson he certainly has the physique to play Black Adam a man reborn with superpowers doling out justice in a not always heroic manner. It is perhaps for that reason that having been introduced in 1945 alongside superhero Shazam , his polar opposite, that Adam was initially killed off during their first comic book encounter as he was slightly of the norm , more of an anti-hero than a hero. Originally titled Mighty Adam he was bought back in the early 1970’s and became part of the Justice Society of America before it evolved into the Justice League with a set of superheroes we’re perhaps more familiar with today. All of this is recounted in the huge array of bonus featurettes on the Black Adam blu-ray DVD, 4K (and also available on Digital download format). All of these go into every facet of the film that explores the character’s origins through to the effects, costumes and fantastic sets. Snappily edited these featurettes have something of the cheesy infomercial about them but that aside they all give an interesting insight into the size of the production.

With a rumoured budget in excess of £200m+ the film only earned $392m at the worldwide box office which is a shame because the money is all on screen with some excellent set pieces including the first appearance of Black Adam in a barnstorming blaze of carnage as he lays waste to all manner of military and their hardware. Helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra who had worked with Johnson on their previous film the big budgeted, Jungle Cruise and he’s proved himself as a more than capable action and effects director notably with films like the excellent shark movie ‘The Shallows’. Quite why the film didn’t perform as well as might be expected is anyone’s guess, although the third act of the film is a little flat compared to what has come before, but the film is a decent addition to Warners DC movie output. Quite whether we will see more of the character seems uncertain since James Gunn & Peter Safran have been appointed as the Kevin Feige equivalent of DC films and that end credit scene that was so publicized with Henry Cavill as Superman that was asset up for a sequel now seems, for the moment, unlikely to continue in any franchise that Johnson had in mind.

Whatever the future of the character the Black Adam blu-ray has enough bonus features for fans new and old with perhaps only the lack of a commentary with director and star enhancing the disc.
