It’s well known just how successful Disney’s live action adaptations of their animated classics have been. But the unexpected announcement back in August 2019 at the D23 Expo of a ‘101 Dalmations’ spin off caught many off guard with it being only the second villain based spin off after Maleficent, the villain from Sleeping Beauty. The trailer HERE looks great and we’re happy to show several Cruella first look photos.
101 Dalmations had a live action version way back in 1996 so the release of Cruella comes on the 25th year anniversary (and 60 years after the animated original) and whereas that first live action film had Glenn Close in the role (and also in its sequel 102 Dalmations) this film is a prequel and has Oscar winner Emma Stone in the title role. Interestingly Glenn Close gets an Executive Producer credit on Cruella.
Originally planned for a Christmas 2020 release the film like so many others was postponed due to the pandemic.
From our Cruella first look photos Dame Emma Thompson (see her going a bit potty at the UK premiere of ‘Dolittle’ HERE) sporting a bit of a Audrey Hepburn look feature as the Baroness in a role that had a number of A-list actresses under consideration including the great Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore and Demi Moore who we think deserves a bit of a career resurgence.
Though none of them feature in our Cruella first look photos the film has a great cast that includes the always great Mark Strong, Joel Fry who made a name for himself as the comic sidekick in the Richard Curtis scripted, ‘Yesterday‘ and Jamie Demetriou best known as Stath in TV comedy series ‘Stath Lets Flats’. Rumour has it that at one point Nicolas Cage was to be cast -goodness knows how mad it would have got then.
From the trailer and our Cruella first look photos the film seems to have a bit of a punk ethos. We’ll soon see when the film is released on 28th May 2021.
