With the 2016 all female reboot of Ghostbusters not doing anywhere near the hoped for business it seemed certain that the franchise was over. Those naysayers were wrong as we now have the first glimpse of the Ghostbusters Afterlife trailer. It appears that this new film will be a direct sequel to the original two movies and will focus on a family with Carrie Coon as the single mother of two kids – a science-obsessed daughter (Mckenna Grace) and gearhead son (Finn Wolfhard) while Paul Rudd plays their school teacher Mr. Grooberson.
The family moves to a small town in Oklahoma after inheriting property from Coon’s character’s father whom she didn’t know. When they arrive they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters. Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.
Written and directed by Jason Reitman son of Ivan who directed the original this seems to be putting kids at the forefront although much like the reboot the Ghostbusters Afterlife trailer shies away from featuring the original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts who will all appear in the film which opens July 10th 2020. In fact as a kid Jason Reitman had a cameo in the second film where he had the line about Ghostbusters being, ‘full of crap” which he said to Ray (Dan Aykroyd). Rumour has it that there will be a mixture of CGI and practical effects much like the first film and after the financial failure of the 2016 reboot this is taking a definite move to re-connect with the first two films. Having watched the Ghostbusters Afterlife trailer a few times we’re still undecided but at least Slimer is back which is no bad thing.
UPDATE………..It’s been 18 months since the first trailer appeared and now that the world seems to have got a grip on the pandemic which devastated cinemas in 2020 we now have a confirmed release date of November 11th 2021!!
