Having won an Oscar for The Shape of Water Guillermo Del Toro is not directing the third film and we now have a first look at the new Hellboy trailer based on the Mike Mignola comics and this installment is directed by our very own Neil Marshall.
From a script by Andrew Cosby the Hellboy trailer the story centres around Hellboy (David Harbour), who is caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human and battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge and all hell breaks loose.
Del Toro is not the only person from the first two films not to return. Ron Perlman as Hellboy has also bowed out with David Harbour taking over whose previous films include Suicide Squad and The Equalizer. Also out is John Hurt though his death, despite the CGI that bought back the late great Peter Cushing in Rogue One, prevented him re-appearing in the third film. It seems also that Selma Blair and Doug Jones also won’t be appearing.
So what we do have instead is Ian McShane as Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, Milla Jovovich as villain Nimue, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell as elder witch Ganeida, and Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio.
It seems that the film is a complete reboot rather than a continuation of Del Toro’s which might explain why its got the same title as the first film though this third film was intended to have The Blood Queen as part of the title too. From the Hellboy trailer it also seems that its relocated from its usual US setting to dear old Blighty aka England where the characters seem to go about laying waste to the city.
The film opens in the UK and the USA on April 12th 2019
