Apart from the horror films directed by James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw) many in the genre are quick cash ins and are forgotten as quickly as a porn stars marriage vows. ‘Hereditary’ on the other hand looks like it could be the horror hit of the year having received absolute rave reviews from the festival circuit where its been playing since late last year.
“Hereditary” stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne (Lies We Tell). When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family dies, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they learn, the more they try to outrun the fate they’ve inherited.
Hereditary is the first feature length film directed by Ari Aster who has a number of short films already under his belt. the film was one of highlights of the Sundance film festival and has received such glowing reviews that Aster is already about to start work on his next horror film “Midsommer” which centers on a young woman, already dealing with the death of her parents, who joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to Sweden. The group specifically head for a remote town with unique midsummer traditions, and things quickly go south from there. ‘Midsommer’ starts filming late summer or early Autumn.
Toni Collette already has form for spooky goings on with The Sixth Sense which incredibly is now almost twenty years old. Gabriel Byrne’s career in horror is muted with only 2002’s ‘Ghost Ship’ being the most obvious film he’s made in the genre but its the casting of the distinctive looking Milly Shapiro in her feature film debut who seems ideally cast in the lead role.
Hereditary opens on 8th June in the US and on the 15th June in the UK.
