Director Aleem Khan is a British film maker who had made a number of acclaimed short films with his last one being nominated by BAFTA for a Best Short Film award before being named as one of Screen International’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow’ in 2015. Since then he has been working on his debut feature film ‘After Love’ starring Joanna Scanlan one of the UK’s greatest actors and herself having three BAFTA nominations to her name.
Set in the port town of Dover, Mary Hussain suddenly finds herself a widow following the unexpected death of her husband. A day after the burial, she discovers he has a secret just twenty-one miles across the English Channel in Calais. Read our review of the film HERE
The film was supported by BBC Films and the BFI and has received selections at Cannes Critics’ Week, Telluride, TIFF and the London Film Festival and has gone on to garner huge acclaim for its story set against an Islamic background. It is another great performance in a role we’ve not seen Joanna Scanlan not play before and went to great pains to get right and done extensive research into Islam and the Arabic culture to portray the role of the grieving widow who is shocked by what she discovers
We spoke to director Aleem Khan about the film where he told us where the story came from, how he got lead actress Joanna Scanlan to speak several scenes in Urdu & Arabic, as well as how he shot several sensitive scenes with her as well as a bit about his own back ground and what we can expect to see from him next.
