In 2004 filmmaker Miranda July was voted as No1 in their ’25 New Faces of Indie Film’. Ironically this was the same year that our Editor last bought a round of drinks at The Nags Head (‘You’re fired!’– Ed). Since then she’s made only two films with the last one being in 2011 but now we have her latest with the release of the Kajillionaire trailer which has already plate to audiences at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews.
Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.
Kajillionaire stars Evan Rachel Wood who deserves to be a lot bigger star after making such an impact in 2013’s ‘Thirteen’ and since then has stuck to mostly indy films (although she did provide a voice for Frozen 2). Co-starring are Gina Rodriguez whose most ommercial film was in Mark Wahlberg starrer, ‘Deepwater Horizon‘. Best of all though is Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger as the parents. You may not know Jenkins name but you’ll know his face having appeared in films as diverse as The Shape of Water to Jack Reacher to the underrated The Cabin in the Woods. Twice Oscar nominated for both The Shape of Water and also the Visitor. Debra Winger having made her name in Richard Gere’s 1982 starrer An Officer and a Gentlemen has been selective about her choice of roles but was in ‘Shadowlands’ and also ‘Leap of Faith’ an unjustly overlooked Steve Martin film.
Kajillionaire is set for a 18th September 2020 release in the US with a UK date to be confirmed.
