Now the AGF team used to go out on a Sunday night for a karaoke night at the local pub. Always a good night mostly because of our Editor’s woeful attempts at singing and destroying classics songs like Aretha Franklin’s Respect due to the fact that his spelling is atrocious. So the pub were treated to him spelling out RPESCPT, RSPETEC and of course RETEPCT it got worse when he decided to sing John Denver’s, ‘Take Me Home, Country Road’ to the tune of Respect but his inability to spell correctly ending catastrophically when be began to misspell the word ‘Country’ ending with the landlord throwing him headlong through the first floor window and landing safely on his head thereby sustaining no discernible change in his intelligence (‘You’re fired!’ – Ed). The even better new is that we now have an Aretha Franklin biopic with the arrival of the Respect trailer.
We had a great performance documentary back last year with ‘Amazing Grace‘ but the Respect trailer is from a film that’s been long in development. The film will follow the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom. Franklin’s life had up and downs from the disaster of a disco album to her father Clarence being shot by a mugger in 1979 and she decided to move back to Detroit to take care of her father until his death in 1984. It coincided with her career revival in 1980 where, along with Ray Charles & James Brown she appeared in the hit feature film ‘The Blues Brothers’ and by 1982, she returned to the R&B top ten charts with her hit album ‘Jump To It’, featuring Luther Vandross selling more than 600,000 copies and was gold-certified, managing to stay at number one for seven weeks.
The Respect trailer has a great cast with JENNIFER HUDSON as Franklin as well as FOREST WHITAKER, & MARLON WAYANS
Respect opens in UK cinemas on 22nd January 2021. Could this be an Oscar contender?
