We’re huge Clint Eastwood fans and at 89 years old he’s still directing and now we have the first glimpse of his new film in the Richard Jewell trailer. Based on Marie Brenner’s Vanity Fair article and adapted by Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips”), the story follows American security guard, Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser), who heroically saves thousands of lives from an exploding bomb at the 1996 Olympics, but is unjustly vilified by journalists and the press who falsely report that he was a terrorist.
Oscar winners Sam Rockwell and Kathy Bates play Jewell’s lawyer and mother respectively while Jon Hamm portrays the FBI inspector looking for the truth in this real-life fake news case, and Olivia Wilde (‘Life Itself‘) plays a reporter covering the story.
The Richard Jewell trailer is the latest in what is an ever lengthening catalogue of true story films for Clint Eastwood that have included this years The Mule (which also starred Eastwood in a return to acting) but also The 15:17 to Paris, Sully, American Sniper, J.Edgar, Invitus, Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers amongst others. This was going to be a follow up after Eastwood had wrapped on Sully but instead chose The 15:17 to Paris and other directors who circled the project included Paul Greengrass, David O Russell and documentary film maker Ezra Edelman.
Richard Jewell is released in the US on 13th December which means its eligible for Oscar nominations. Eastwood is renowned for his economical and on schedule filming and it came as a bit of a surprise that this is getting a release so early after shooting finished so hopes by the studio are therefore high for nominations but then the same happened with The 15:17 to Paris only for it to be something of a disappointment.
