If you’ve never heard of Stan & Ollie better known as Laurel and Hardy then frankly shame on you. Widely regarded as the best comedy double act ever they influenced generation after generation including Morecambe & Wise to The Office (those looks to camera are a direct lift from Oliver Hardy). The Stan and Ollie trailer will be a revelation to you.
Stan Laurel was a Brit from the North of England who had travelled to Hollywood and Oliver Hardy was an American who usually played heavies in silent movies and they were put together by producer Hal Roach in 1926. From thereon they made a huge number of two reeler shorts many utter master classes in comedy timing and their best was probably the incomparable ‘The Music Box’ set around the simple premise of trying to deliver a piano up a huge flight of steps to a front door. They went onto make feature length films again many brilliant of which the most memorable is ‘Way Out West’ with the song ‘Trail of the Lonesome Pine’ which went on to be a huge hit in the British singles chart in the seventies.
Both were married multiple times and ultimately their careers began to stall and in the twilight of their years they came to the UK to do a theatre tour in a bid to rekindle their careers. With their golden era long behind them, the pair embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) – a formidable double act in their own right – the pair’s love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public.
The Stan and Ollie trailer for the first time gives a glimpse of them as played by Steve Coogan (Ideal Home) and John C Reilly (Kong:Skull Island). Both look superb and the Stan And Ollie trailer is already generating Oscar talk.
The films opens in the UK on 11 January 2019.
