Released in summer 2023 Barbie turned out to be the biggest film of the year brilliantly marketed with a shit in the trailer that was both iconic and hilarious subversive. The moment was close up Barbie’s foot in a high heel shoe which she steps out of only for her arched foot to remain in exactly the same position balancing on her toes position as per the toy dolls feet. So what’s the story behind the shot Barbie ?
Unlike so many of the other summer blockbusters that year director Greta Gerwig opted for old-school practical techniques like matte paintings instead of embracing VFX and the shot in question is a deceptively simple one. Yet was not without its problems to shoot.
In the shot they are Margot Robbie’s feet but when she stepped out of the shoes they had to be stuck to the floor to prevent them falling over and staying on her foot as she tried to step out of them. In addition to this just out of shot was a rail that she could grip onto so as to maintain her balance when she stepped out of the shoes as she would now be standing on her tip toe without any support to her feet.
Robbie was insistent on doing the shot herself and explained, “It was probably about eight takes. Wasn’t that many,” the actress explained. “I walked up, we had little sticky bits on the floor, double-sided tape for the shoes, so they wouldn’t come off, so I could get my feet out of them. And I was holding on to, like, a bar. But that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. I just walked up, kind of held on to the bar above [the] camera.
It was a visual gag that worked extremely well and set the tone for what audiences could expect////and that6’s the story behind the shot Barbie .
