Landing in our inbox is The Color Purple trailer which many might well remember as the first heavyweight dramatic film that Steven Spielberg shot way back in 1985 after a sting of nig budget blockbusters that included Jaws, Close Encounters and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Based on a Pulitzer prize winning novel and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey the film became famous for being nominated for eleven Oscars and winning none and was widely seen as a snub to Spielberg who was very much the wonder kid of Hollywood
So that a remake has been made surprised many but perhaps now is a good time for such a film and Spielberg returns in a producer capacity. “The Color Purple” stars Taraji P. Henson (“What Men Want,” “Hidden Figures”), Danielle Brooks (“Peacemaker,” “Orange Is the New Black”), Colman Domingo (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Fear the Walking Dead”), Corey Hawkins (“In the Heights,” “BlacKkKlansman”), H.E.R. (“Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid,” “Grown-ish”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”), and Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut).
The screenplay is by Marcus Gardley (“Maid,” “The Chi”), based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. This is a musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s.
