Since the critical and box office success of ‘Logan’ Hugh Jackman is now moving onto other projects the first of which is a return to a love of his, the musical, and here he stars in ‘The Greatest Showman’ described as, ”a bold and original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and the sense of wonder we feel when dreams come to life. Inspired by the ambition and imagination of P.T. Barnum, “The Greatest Showman” tells the story of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.
“The Greatest Showman” is directed by exciting new filmmaker, Michael Gracey, and interesting choice as his back ground is in visual effects on a handful of films and this is his feature film directorial debut. There’s clearly a very thinly disguised subtext to the film with lines like, ‘no one ever made a difference by being like everyone else’.
We’ve always been bemused by the sudden outburst of song for no obvious reason and the ‘Hey let’s put on a show right here!’ attitude of some musicals but this does look very good. with songs by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land”).
Film opens in the US on December 20th and in the UK December 26th.
