Most of us have seen Lord of the Rings though sadly we know someone who insists that Peter Jackson wrote the books rather than J R R Tolkien. Well we’ve had the film of the book and now we get the film of the author with the release of the Tolkien trailer which stars Nicholas Hoult in the lead role who was so good in Oscar favourite The Favourite.
The Tolkien trailer explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
It co-stars Lily Collins who has been very busy having also co-starred in the recent trailer for Yesterday too. The film has a decent cast too with Pam Ferris, Derek Jacobi and Colm Meaney also. This is not the first time that Nicholas Hoult has played a real life author having appeared as J D Salinger , author of The Catcher in the Rye, in the film ‘Rebel in the Rye’ in 2017 opposite Kevin Spacey (for some reason he doesn’t seem to be making films anymore).
Tolkien is directed by the bizarrely named Dome Karukoski, a Finnish director from Cyprus and this is his first English language film though quite whether of the film is in Elvish remains to be seen (or heard). Rumour has it that the are some explosive and harrowing war scenes in the trenches which were shot in sunny Altringham, Cheshire normally the setting of inane and vapid teen soap opera Hollyoaks.
Tolkien is released on May 3rd in the UK and on May 10th 2019 in the US
