Westerns come in and out of fashion and are firmly rooted in America but ‘Brimstone‘ is a Dutch film, yet to watch it you’d never think it. Written and directed by Martin Koolhaven this is one of the best westerns we’ve seen in years and wholly deserved the glut of awards it won.
BRIMSTONE stars Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and the Emmy-award winner Guy Pearce (Alien Covenant), following a young woman’s epic quest for survival. Liz (Fanning) is a young and beautiful woman who is being hunted by a vengeful Preacher (Pearce) – a diabolical extremist and her nemesis. But Liz is a genuine survivor; she’s no victim but instead a woman of fearsome strength who responds with astonishing bravery to claim the better life she and her daughter deserve.
Told in four chapters, it is a suspenseful tale of guilt and retribution that unfolds at the end of the 19th century in the unforgiving American West. BRIMSTONE is a tale of powerful womanhood and the resistance against an unforgiving cruelty of a Hell on Earth.
The film’s four chapters are told in a flashback structure and is never flashy but serves to reveal more of the back story and explain aspects of character and how they have all come to be where they are.
This is epic in scale and length but is well worth watching though there are some undeniably strong scenes in this which fully warrants its certificate.
