Cheese in an aerosol can, Wal-Mart supermarkets that sell firearms and voting for a comedy comb over, politically illiterate lunatic as President are all quaint customs associated with the US yet one that we always forget about is keeping a a five-hundred-pound tiger and a seven-foot alligator in a 21st floor apartment. At least that’s what Antoine Yates, a resident in New York, did until he was arrested in 2003 for reckless endangerment.
‘Ming of Harlem: ‘21 Storeys in the Air’, ‘Winner of the Prix Georges de Beauregard at FID Marseille in 2014 and the Universities Culturgest Prize at Indie Lisboa in 2015, Phillip Warnell’s beautifully crafted, haunting documentary explores the secret lives, behaviour and extreme levels of human-beast intimacy (and no, that’s not what you think it is, you sick pervs!) and communication, focusing on the ‘only in New York’ story of Antoine Yates.
