’26!’ our Editor shouted excitedly when he heard us talk about this week’s new release ‘Triple 9’. It also goes some way to explain why his tax returns are nearly always wrong.
Anyway ‘Triple 9’ is a great little thriller starring Kate Winslet. It all starts at a blistering pace with a brutal robbery and car chase with the surprise being that it’s been carried out by a crew of corrupt cops. It’s only after this that they find themselves blackmailed by a Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist they realise the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a ‘999’ – a US police code for ’officer down’. The chaos that follows when an officer is shot is just the sort of diversion they need to do the job but whether they have the will to kill one of their own is a different matter. Their plan is turned on its head when the rookie cop they set up to die foils the attack triggering a breakneck action packed finale chock full of double crosses , greed and revenge.
This is on of those rattling good thrillers with twists galore where few can be trusted and Kate Winslet is great in the role of a cruelly confident Russian mob boss and is ably supported by Gal Gadot in a pre-Wonder Woman role that demonstrates that she if far more than just an ex-beauty contestant. In fairness all are uniformly good and director John Hillcoat has landed a great cast including Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson and Casey Affleck and Norman Reedus in a small but memorable role. Hillcoat’s previous films have included ‘The Road’ and ‘Lawless’ and ‘Triple9’ has moments as brutal as either of those and is unflinching in its depiction of violence. This is a great thriller with a stunning climatic scene and here’s your chance to win a copy by just answering the following question:
