Now everyone loves Roald Dahl books and many of them have been made into films: some great such as 1971’s ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ and some far from great…… the 2005 ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ remake but once more we’re going to have a remake of one of his books as we saw when The Witches trailer landed in our inbox.
Reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis’ visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.
The film stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway (“Ocean’s 8”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Shape of Water”), Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci with Kristin Chenoweth and award-winning comedy legend Chris Rock. Newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno also stars, alongside Codie-Lei Eastick. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that the casting of the hatchet faced embittered crones doesn’t include anyone from TV’s, ‘Loose Women’.
Director Robert Zemeckis has not had much success with his recent run of films. His last, ‘Welcome to Marwen‘ bombed making only $13m off a $39m budget. Before that the Brad Pitt starrer ‘Allied‘ only earned $113m off a $85m budget and back in 2015 his 3D film ‘The Walk’ – a true life story about a high wire artist who walked between New York’s Twin Towers and was an ideal subject for 3D but only made $61m off a $30m budget. His last mega hit was 2012’s ‘Flight’ with Denzel Washington so the studio must be hoping that The Witches trailer will be a return to success.
