It is not easy to to understand how, almost fifty years ago what Saturday Night Live was. the brain child of producer Lorne Michaels it featured a load of relatively unknown but soon to be superstar comedians that included John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner amongst others and all headed up by Chevy Chase or at least in his mind they were. BIt was a huge gamble with the old school comics railing against it, the studio heads not supporting it and a crew on the verge of mutiny before the show went went live where anything could happen. It often did with several notorious moments notably one with Andy Kaufman where he trashed a sketch live on air.
