Ghosts The Possession of Button Hall – REVIEW

Ghosts - the trailer for the feature film of the great TV series!

BBC sitcom Ghosts was immense fun lasting five series before drawing to a natural close three years ago. But understandably fans still want more from the ensemble cast that included disgraced Tory MP Julian (the always fantastic Simon Farnaby), Edwardian matriarch Fanny (Martha Howe-Douglas), World War II captain, (Ben Willbond), scout troupe leader Pat (Jim Howick), caveman Robin (Laurence Rickard), failed Georgian poet Thomas (Mathew Baynton) and naive Georgian noble woman Kitty (Lolly Adefope). A group of disparate characters exchanging banter and bicker in the Button House mansion where each died over the years.

Ghosts The Possession of Button Hall are bored and so…..

The previous owners sold up, packed up and cleared off at the end of the final series and since then the group have been bored as they wait for the mansion to be turned into a hotel golfing resort but building work has still to begin. So while they wait they go about their haunting jaunts scaring off a group of kids who break in and use a ouiji board only for it to spell out ‘LEAVE’ and run off without the MP having had time to add ‘EUROPE’ in one of many neat jokes.

But the future of the mansion lies in the hands of that same group of kids led by foster child Jack (Scott Ellis Watson), a corrupt MP (is there any other type?) some eco-warriors as well as the previous owners Alison and Mike.

Seeing Ghosts….

Written by Farnaby Baynton & Howe-Douglas there’s a lot to like about an unexpected film of the TV series  and from director Simon Hynd there’s several cinematic flourishes not seen (or affordable) in the TV series. And the film takes the characters away from the mansion setting of the TV series and takes in a car chase, one of them getting tazered and for the first time sees the MP wearing trousers in a genre mash up that takes in action, body swop, conspiracies and more. For the fans of the series as well as those new to it this big screen version will not disappoint.
