After the pantomime of the Amber Heard trial now some years behind him Johnny Depp returns to the dressing up box for his first proper big budget role playing the title role in Ebenezer and from what we see from the trailer it looks a lot of fun and something to look forward to un the run up to Christmas
Described as a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London it follows one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future as he fights for a second chance at redemption.
Johnny Depp is joined by a starry cast that includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Sir Ian McKellen!
Behind Ebenezer….
Perhaps most interestingly is the choice of Ti West as director. West’s background is in horror and and his most recent films have been a horror trilogy starring Mia Goth to impressive effect. But his 2011 film ‘The Innkeepers’ was an effectively creepy ghost story making him ideal to helm the Ebenezer film with its three ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and it will be interesting to see what West does with them and whether it will scare kids senseless.
Iconic roles…
Depp has always been great with grotesque comic creations winning an Oscar nomination for his iconic Captain Jack Sparrow but has also reinvented the Mad Hatter, Sweeny Todd (another Oscar nomination) Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beats films and Tonto in The Lone Ranger and of course Willy Wonka so its likely that his version of Ebenezer will be as quirky as anything he has done previously
Ebenezer is released in the UK on 13th November 2026
