The Story of Ramayana….
In an age of gods and kings, the fate of worlds hangs in the balance. Rama, a prince bound by duty, sacrifice, and righteousness, must confront Ravana, an immortal ruler driven by pride and vengeance, powerful enough to shatter the cosmos.
Why so expensive?
The most expensive Indian Hindi language film in history and in fairness its looks it with all the money being on the screen if the trailer is anything to go by. To ensure the CGI characters and mythical creatures move with absolute realism, the production is utilizing Vicon’s Valkyrie motion capture cameras paired with Shogun software, a setup typically reserved for top-tier Hollywood blockbuster video games and films. The producer bankrolling this massive $500 million project, Namit Malhotra, originally started his first editing studio (Video Workshop) out of a humble Mumbai garage with three of his college teachers before building his global VFX empire.
Behind the scenes….
Recognizing that visual effects often make or break mythological epics, the producers locked in a staggering 600-day schedule dedicated entirely to post-production. This ensures the 8-time Oscar-winning VFX studio, DNEG, has ample time to refine the world of Ayodhya and Lanka. Despite the heavy use of CGI and virtual production, the art department constructed over 12 elaborate, large-scale physical sets. Many of these massive structures were dismantled immediately after the actors finished their scenes to make way for the lengthy post-production phase….and it looks like there’s a second film too!
