Over the past 5 years or so we’ve had a whole slew of ‘Girl’ films including ‘The Girl on the Train’, ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘The Girl behind the bar who always ignores the Editor’ (OK we made that last one up). The best of all of these was the adaptations of author Stieg Larsson’s Millienium trilogy starting with ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which was remade by David Fincher with Daniel Craig. Though Larsson tragically passed away before he could enjoy the enormous success of the books he did have plans for further books which despite the problems within his estate between his partner and his own family produced a fourth novel in 2014 called ‘The Girl in the Spiders Web’ written by David Lagercrantz. Sony who made the remake had issues with the costs run up by Fincher for the remake and its stalled doing a remake of the second and third novel and instead they are pushing ahead with this fourth book which will be the first time one of the novels has been made in English first.
The job of directing the film has fallen to Fede Alvarez who was behind last years horror hit, ‘Don’t Breathe’ and will write the screenplay along with Steven Knight and Jay Basu.
The studio and Alvarez have launched a worldwide search for an actress to lead an entirely new cast but who will play the iconic character, Lisabeth Salander? It seems that Alvarez wants to start afresh and rumour has it that Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman or his own favourite Jane Levy may be cast in the role.
The film is pencilled in for release on October 5th 2018 so things should start moving pretty quickly with this. The fifth book yet to be titled will be out in September 2017 and Sony own the rights to all future Millenium novels.
