Those of a certain age may remember ITV’s World of Sport hosted every Saturday afternoon by Dickie Davis and and because the BBC had all the best sport the show was reduced to British wrestling which was a peculiarity unto itself. usually held in a ropey town hall with pot bellied late middle aged men in spandex trunks that barely contained what looked like the last chicken in the shop as they grappled with each other ultimately trying to remain upright before their belly unbalanced them for the umpteenth time. With names like Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks (yes, really) all of this would be watched by female pensioners shouting obscenities raging at the wrestlers in a manner not dissimilar to them shopping and trying to use an out of date discount coupon. Well American wrestling was a different matter altogether if The Iron Claw trailer is anything to go by.
The Iron Claw is based on the true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.
Zac Efron plays Kevin Von Erich alongside Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Holt McCallany is Fritz Von Erich, Maura Tierney as family matriarch Doris, and Lily James as Kevin’s wife Pam. Chavo Guerrero served as the wrestling coordinator for the film. Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”) writes and directs the $20million budgeted film which covers the highs and the tragic lows of the family
The Iron Claw opens on 22nd December 2023 with a UK release on 9th February 2024
