Summer 2023’a blockbuster Barbie was a huge success earning $1.4billiion and becoming the biggest earner of the year and went on to set records for a number of firsts that included the highest-grossing film from a solo female director. But despite the huge commercial and critical acclaim a Barbie sequel is in doubt.
For a start the studio (Warners) has no sequel options for anyone involved, so if a sequel was to be made, expensive new deals with Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and co-writer/director Greta Gerwig would have to be struck…..and Robbie is rumoured to have made $50m from the film. Added to this is what Margot Robbie said at a recent interview with Associated Press stating, “I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
With awards season about to ramp up Barbie is said to be a serious contender on a number of fronts from production design , screenwriting and also for Ryan Gosling. According to the actor he accepted the role of Ken after seeing his daughter’s Ken doll lying face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. He then took a shot of the doll and lemon and sent it to Greta Gerwig, saying, “I shall be your Ken, his story must be told.”
Warners would obviously be keen on a Barbie sequel but bringing the cast back might be prohibitively expensive. Toymakers Mattel are extremely keen with the film having pushed toy sales for the doll but also have a load of other toys set for film adaptations (Hot Wheelz being just one of thirteen projects) and are purportedly pushing hard for a sequel.
