Based on Chris Grine’s graphic novel is ‘Chickenhare and the Secret of the Groundhog’ that’s an unexpected follow up to the 2025 film that had an equally jumbled title (Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness). With the body of a hare and the legs of a chicken with ears that are wings he and his adventuring chums Meg the skunk and Abe the turtle take on a quest for the Backward-Facing groundhog who has the power to change just one thing in the past. It’s a quest that would surely have been grabbed by Prince Harry.
Chickenhare and his mission…
Having been made aware of the Groundhog by King Peter, Chicken hare sets off but not before Royal archivist Gina who reveals herself to be his secret sister and unknown to them all is King Bartholomew who is also after the Groundhog in order to reverse a curse that has beset his people for generations. Into the mix to thwart Chickenhare & co is Crolloq the lynx, the Belloq to Chickenhare’s Indiana Jones and adds the film’s most unexpected aspect in her romantic designs on Meg.
Hybrid….
Like the spork (a spoon and fork in one) that instigates the story it’s an awkward hybrid of a title character that swerves amalgamating the central figure’s name, Chickenhare, to be called a ‘Chair’ and mercifully the creators avoided making the animal part Shark, part Rabbit (‘You’re fired! – Ed). Playing like an animal version of Raiders of the Lost Ark it briskly moves along but will struggle against this summer’s animated blockbusters lacking the gleeful daftness of Minions & Monsters and the nuance of Toy Story 5 but for young children ‘Chickenhare and the Secret of the Groundhog’ is enough of a distraction to keep them quiet for 90 minutes.
