So if ever a film was going to stir up a bit of controversy then it is possible that what we see in The Book of Clarence trailer is going to be that film
A down on his luck Jerusalemite embarks on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and influence the Messiah for his own personal gain. The journey leads him on an exploration of faith and an unexpected path.
Starring LaKeith Stanfield as Clarence the film also co-stars Omar Sy, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, RJ Cyler and Teyana Taylor co-star.
The film feature Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene but writer director Jeymes Samuel tells states that it is “a Bible story about an everyman…. I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals.”. The journey to become one of Jesus’ apostles leads him on an exploration of faith and an unexpected path. Tone wise the film has both humor and heart, but isn’t a faith-based movie per se even as Christianity provides a backdrop for the story.
Jeymes Samuel’s last film was 2021’s western ,’The Harder they Fall’ starring Jonathan Majors and did well for him earning the director a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Lead actor LaKeith Stanfield career is also on the up having been Oscar nominated for his role in ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ and bought him to the attention of Hollywood in a standout role
The Book of Clarence opens in cinemas January 12th 2024.
