Stanley Kubrick's deleted scenes - The original end of The Shining

Missing Kubrick….

Generally regarded as one of the greatest ever directors Stanley Kubrick was meticulous about making his films and the time span between each film got ever longer culminating in a 12 year gap between 1987’s Full Metal Jacket and his final film Eyes Wide Shut (1999). It is well documented that the director controlled every aspect of his films but the one thing that fans of his films will never find on the Home Entertainment releases of his films are Stanley Kubrick’s deleted scenes.

Those Stanley Kubrick deleted scenes….

Having appeared in his 1975 film Barry Lyndon actor Leon Vitali was in awe of the directors film making process and became his right hand man for the rest of Kubrick’s career. Full of terrific behind the scenes stories Vitali spoke to us extensively about the making of The Shining during which we came round to talking about the films deleted scenes and especially the ending which saw Wendy in hospital after the catastrophic events at the Overlook hotel at the hands of Jack and she is visited by the hotel’s manager. It was an ending that was cut in favour of the final shot tracking through the hotel ending on a photograph from the hotel 1929 New Years Eve party with Jack front and centre.

All is revealed….

But what happened to the footage of the hospital scene ? It wasn’t the only scene that Kubrick deleted from one of his films as Dr Strangelove also had a major scene cut namely a huge custard pie fight in the war room. That was another scene that Kubrick removed from the final cut.

So for the first time Leon told us what happened to Stanley Kubrick’s deleted scenes…
