Irish director Neil Jordan has an impressive back catalogue of films that includes The Company of Wolves and Mona Lisa before he made The Crying Game that attracted much acclaim and won him an Oscar. The success of the film saw Hollywood offers flood in and the project that caught his attention was the film adaptation of Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ : The Vampire Chronicles’. The film saw a vampire tells his epic life story of love, betrayal, loneliness and hunger.
It was a hot project for Hollywood with just about every A-list star under consideration for the two lead roles that eventually fell to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise with support from Antonio Banderas who had caught the attention of US studios with his Spanish films.
A spectacular and lavish production the film was a big success and earned two Oscar nominations. We had the chance to chat to Neil Jordan again (a previous interview with him had seen him having to contend with a broken leg). He chatted about every aspect of the film from how it came to him, the casting that had seen a host of A-listers in contention for the main roles to directing children (here’s it was a very young Kirsten Dunst).
