Digger – TRAILER

Now Tom Cruise already has three Oscar nominations to his name (Born On The Fourth Of July, Jerry Maguire, and a supporting role in Magnolia for which he really should have won). And in fairness he was presented with an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards back in November 2025. But at CinemaCom there was a first look at director Alejandro González Iñárritu new film that included the Digger trailer which has had pundits asking,  ‘Is this the film to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar….finally?’

Digger follows the most powerful man in the world who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything. 

So is this the film to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar?

‘Digger’ has an almost unrecognisable Cruise sporting a thick Southern accent, a beer belly and thinning white hair in an unconvincing combover. In the film he plays an oil baron whose company may have set off an ecological disaster that could also spark a nuclear war. John Goodman portrays an ailing U.S. president who implores Cruise’s character to fix the mess he’s unleashed.

Now the reason for suggesting that the film is the one to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar is linked to that honorary Oscar and the theory goes like this.  Way back in 1980 screen legend Henry Fonda was presented with an Honorary Oscar and went onto win Best Actor for On Golden Pond the following year. Equally the screen legend Paul Newman was presented with an Honorary Academy Award in 1985 and the following year saw him win a Best Actor Oscar for The Color Of Money (that also co-starred Cruise). There’s been little else shown at CinemaCon to suggest that he has much competition except for Jeremy Strong who plays Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network sequel, The Social Reckoning.
