We have all taken less than enviable part time jobs when we were students if for no other reason to blow our earnings on the weekend but Delivery Run features Lee (Alexander Arnold) who is not a student but instead an underachieving slacker with an eviction order, nearly bankrupt fuelled by a gambling habit and in debt to a pair of local criminals with trigger hair tempers. And the only source of income he has is as a food delivery driver for a local pizzeria. And then it gets even worse for him.
In the dark snowy back roads of Minnesota ( though it was actually shot in Finland) he makes his deliveries with only his goldfish Reggie in a plastic bag of water on his dashboard for company. And it is on the snowfilled backroads that he finds himself drawn into a rage rage incident with a snow plough and its driver who then pursues him throughout the night.
Written and directed by Joey Palmroos this is a brisk 84 minutes that plays like Spielberg’s ‘Duel’ on snow with a bit of The Hitcher thrown in for good measure. Much like Spielberg’s Jaws his debut feature Duel was a low key masterwork as a thriller that’s rarely been surpassed and though Delivery Run never really reaches those dizzy heights. With a switch in tone as the film moves on there’s a lot to enjoy although a coda to the very end of the film is not needed but with a enjoyable lead performance this is an enjoyable Saturday night movie ….but maybe think twice about ordering a pizza for delivery.
