Director Alex Gibney has a back catalogue of documentaries that are well worth a look but his latest promises to be quite something if the trailer for Musk is anything to go by. The Musk in question is not a fragrance but of course Elon, the worlds first trillionaire and richest man on the planet and what race baiting grifter Meghan Markle presumably regards as the one that got away.
Described as a thorough and unvarnished analysis of Elon Musk, the technology billionaire who serves as the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter/ X.
Back in March 2023 Gibney revealed that work had started on the documentary and was “many months” into production. In response Musk responded commented on his own X/Twitter account by predicting it would be “a hit piece.” Also on X Gibney replied, “how would you know?” The trailer does not give away much about the plot but instead illustrates Musk’s polarizing character.
The documentary will feature an original song from Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, who wrote and performed the new track entitled “Let Me Sell You a Dream.” But as an indicator of just how much it will dive into Musk the documentary is a massive almost four hours long!
The film will world premiere today (8th September) out of competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival before continuing to the Toronto International Film Festival.
The documentary is released in the US on the 18th September 2026
