The Exorcist has been patchy to put it kindly ands whilst the first film was groundbreaking and award winning what followed were varying degrees of disastrous with only the third film coming away with any dignity. 2023’s Exorcist Believer, a hoped for reboot, was a disaster after Universal had paid around $400m for the franchise, the film was met with derision and disinterest. So the studio have gone back to square one and given director Mike Flanagan who really does know how to do horror, carte blanche to begin afresh with a clean slate to do as he wishes. The film has already been shot under much secrecy but details have emerged
What we know about the new Exorcist reboot….
- The film is titled “The Exorcist: Martyrs,”
- It stars Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Diane Lane along with Flanagan regulars Rahul Kohli and Carla Gugino.
- Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak, and Carla Gugino appear in supporting roles.
- Ejiofor will play a priest connected to the investigation; Laurence Fishburne is the priest who performs the exorcism, and Diane Lane plays the mother of Johansson’s character. Sasha Calle and Rahul Kohli will play cops
- The story follows a single-mother cop who, thirteen years after taking down a notorious satanic serial killer, investigates a new series of murders connected to her past. At the same time, her twelve-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force. Johansson plays the detective, with John Leguizamo as the infamous satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday.
- ”The Exorcist: Martyrs” is slated to open in March 2027
Flanagan has stated that his intention was to do something that “had never been done within the franchise… something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia.”
