Brad Bird is arguably one of the great animation directors of modern times. The Incredibles (and its sequel), The Iron Giant and Rataouille are all his. Though he had huge success with his debut live action film ‘Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol’ he also had disaster with ‘Tomorrowland’. He’s since returned to his first love animation and is currently in London promoting ‘Ray Gunn’ that will debut at the London Film Festival. In an interview he was asked about various aspects of his career and one question came up which was how he ended up voicing Edna Mole in ‘The Incredibles’.
Answering that question he first revealed how Lily Tomlin was approached for the voice role. To give her an idea of what he was after Bird demonstrated a scratchy voice to demonstrate what he was hoping for with Tomlin egging him on.
Bird explained, “I was doing the whole thing, and she kept saying, ‘Can you do that again?’” he recalled. “And she finally said, ‘Look, I have a tape recorder. Do you want to just do all the scenes?’ And so she gives me the recorder and kind of wanders off into her workspace.”
…and that’s how director Brad Bird ended up voicing Edna Mole in The Incredibles !
