Children’s programmes turned psycho is not a new thing and are often played for laughs but the trailer for Buddy looks particularly dark
The film sees a group of children that are trapped inside a surreal 1990s children’s television show hosted by a giant orange unicorn named BUDDY, where defiance results in extreme violence. A young girl named Freddy rallies the surviving children to escape while a mother named Grace searches the warped reality to find her daughter.
It comes from the producers of Friendship and Weapons ( which ius a major plus sign), Buddy is directed by Casper Kelly, writer and director of the viral video Too Many Cooks and the ‘Cheddar Goblin’ sequence of Mandy.
Buddy stars Keegan-Michael Key (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) as the voice of Buddy, Cristin Milioti (The Penguin, Palm Springs), Topher Grace (Flight Risk, Spider Man 3), Patton Oswalt (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water).
Former Barney voice actor Dean Wendt praised the film on his Instagram, highlighting Keegan-Micahel Key’s vocal performance as a standout and noting how the set design gave him flashbacks to working on ‘Barney & Friends’. Part of the ad campaign for this film includes a YouTube channel which showcases specially filmed commercials and show clips. They even teamed up with independent game studio ModRetro to create a Buddy video game.
Buddy is in UK and Ireland cinemas on 27th November from Vertigo Releasing
